With all the cold weather recently, I’ve been think about warmer times. Why, I might even miss the summer! If you were fortunate enough this summer to watch our production of The Gondoliers, then you could see why it’s one of our most performed of Gilbert and Sullivan’s works. The music was beautiful and the cast was in top shape. It was especially gratifying to be putting the same show we did on our very first summer weekend, way back in 1952, and even though our production may be more refined, I like to think we show the same enthusiasm and love for these works as we did on those evenings 65 years ago.
The time I don’t care to recall, however, is that stormy week in August. Even though it’s been a number of months, the devastation brought by Hurricane Harvey still weighs on our community. Some of you might remember the damage done by Hurricane Ike to our Princess Ida set. Well, I’m happy to report that our warehouse stood up to Harvey and we escaped without serious damage. The Theater District, however, is another matter. Our home in the Wortham Center was seriously affected and will be rebuilding for some time. Fortunately, we’ve made alternate plans for our summer production and will share those with you soon.
On a personal note, I wanted to tell you that this will be my last letter to you as Society President. As of last November, after 33 years, I have stepped down and passed the torch to Steve McCary, most recently our Vice President of Production. I will let him
introduce himself, but let me assure you I have the utmost confidence in his abilities, as well as those of the rest of the Board, to continue steering this ship in the future. I will remain on the Board as a full voting member, ready to contribute in any way I can.
Warmly,
Steve Robbins
