The last few months have been extremely difficult for us as I'm sure they have been for you. In my forty-one years on this planet, this will be the first summer that I will not have seen a G&S show. I'm not sure what a summer even looks like without countless hours of rehearsals, moving into a theater, the excitement of opening night, the relief of the closing show, and the outright silliness of a cast party.
We in the Society have been working tirelessly to bring you some Gilbert and Sullivan merriment to help fill your summer. Some will be old shows brought to life in new digital forms, some will be new content from our current members, some will even contain surprise guests providing commentary and live Q&A sessions.
As with all arts groups, we are looking to stay afloat ourselves while also helping our production partners which make these summer shows possible; people like
AFM Local 65-699 which represents our orchestra musicians,
IATSE Local 51which represents our stage hands, the
International Gilbert and Sullivan Festivalin England, the
Houston Arts Alliance Artist Relief Fund, and several other organizations that are committed to helping local artists get through these unprecedented times until we can once more take the stage together and bring you the beautiful productions you have loved since 1951.
If you are able and willing, here is a link that will take you to
our donation page. As a gift to you, please enjoy our virtual choir performance of our Society's anthem,
Hail, Poetry! from The Pirates of Penzance.
Stay safe,
Steven B. McCary President, The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston
